Winter 2012 Recap

We just completed our Winter 2012 term filled with wonderful films and great guest interviews.  Here’s a recap:

January bonus films started off with two action-packed films for our first two bonus screenings:  Contraband (starring Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster and Kate Beckinsale) and Haywire (starring Ewan McGregor, Gina Carano and Michael Douglas).

For our opening night on January 25th, Prof. Brown welcomed director Brett Ratner (Tower Heist, The Family Man) to talk about his body of work.  Take a look at some clips here.   Our film that evening was from IFC:  Declaration of War played at the Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals to rave reviews.

On our second evening of the Winter, we were delighted to welcome directors TJ Martin and Dan Lindsay and their Academy Award Nominated documentary, Undefeated.  The film is an intimate chronicle of three underprivileged student-athletes from inner-city Memphis and the volunteer coach trying to help them beat the odds on and off the field.

The following week, we showed Act of Valor, a dynamic new film from directors Scott Waugh and Mike “Mouse” McCoy  and Relativity Films.  Set to open this Friday, February 24th, Act of Valor is a new type of action film that follows actual Navy Seals in the line of duty.  Take a look at their film here.

Director Oren Moverman and cinematographer Bobby Bukowski joined us for a special weekend screening Rampart, starring Woody Harrelson, Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi, Ned Beatty, Ice Cube, Anne Heche and Cynthia Nixon.  We’ll be posting clips from that interview shortly.  In the meantime, you can see the trailer and website for the film here.

Our final film was Forgiveness of Blood (IFC Films)–also in theaters Friday February 24th–from director Joshua Marston (Maria Full of Grace) and Producer Paul Mezey (Maria Full of Grace).  Paul joined Prof. Brown for a great conversation about his collaboration with Joshua Marston on this film.

Director, Taika Waititi will join us for our final bonus screening on Saturday, February 25th for his remarkable film, BOY, an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival, and winner of the Audience Award at the AFI Fest.   Take a look at their website here.
